Richard and Betty’s Story

 In Stories

Betty, with the help of day carers has been supporting her husband, Richard who has been living with dementia for several years.

Unfortunately, Betty became unwell and was admitted to hospital. Whilst in hospital, their son (James) contacted Live In Carers Direct as he could see that when his mother was ready for discharge, there needed to be a more supportive care package in place and that Betty would not be in a position to look after Richard and recuperate at the same time. A personal friend of James’s, who had been in a similar position advised that live in carers could be an ideal option.

Betty says; ‘Someone from Live In Carers Direct came to meet with myself, Richard and James in hospital to discuss the option of live-in care and how it could potentially work for us all. We were all impressed as to how it was explained and that they would find a trusted carer to suit our needs to look after both of us. We discussed the option of a care home that could initially take Richard full-time and myself for a period of respite to fully recuperate, however we felt at this point in time that the flexibility that live-in offered was much more attractive to us. With Richard’s dementia, it was more beneficial to remain in a place that he knew well and to have everything around him that he was used to’.

‘Live In Carers Direct then introduced us to a number of carers, but I was satisfied to just meet the one that they had recommended to us. It’s worked out really well and now allowed us to regain control of our lives and I would highly recommend live-in as its allowed us to continue to stay in our family home with all the support that we need’.
